Statement of Services
The Office of Affirmative Action guides, directs, assists and monitors the administration and the faculty to ensure fair and equal treatment of all individuals in the processes which affect education and employment by enforcing all federal/state laws and regulations as well as university policies and procedures related to civil rights, affirmative action, and non-discrimination.
Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Develop an annual Affirmative Action Plan
- Administer a Recruitment Manual
- and process to ensure that the University complies with regulations from a number of federal
- Provide a list of Academic, Administrative and Other Professional job openings.
- Provide consultation, information, training, and technical advice to departments and search committees for non-classified and faculty positions on recruitment strategies and procedures throughout the recruitment and hiring process. This may include information for recruiting minorities and women from registers, and working with departments to set goals for affirmative action.
- Monitor and approve all administrative, faculty and staff hiring decisions
- Evaluate and investigate discrimination complaints filed by students, faculty and staff
- Respond to complaints filed against the University of Arkansas with state and federal civil rights agencies and monitor the resolution of such complaints.
- Provide information relating to accommodations under the American Disabilities Act. Monitor ADA accommodations.
- Provide training to departments and classrooms on anti-discrimination matters, such as sexual harassment (forms of sexual harrassment and the University policy) and diversity awareness programs. This will serve as an educational tool to create an awareness of sexual harassment problems, laws, and remedies. It will also provide students, staff and faculty with an outlet for informal discussion of sexual harassment problems on campus and provide resources for additional information and referral regarding the prevention and redress of sexual harassment on campus. Human Resources also has tapes on prejudice and sexual harassment that can be borrowed for viewing in departments and/or classrooms.
- Counsel and advise students and campus officials in matters involving discrimination of all forms and serve as a resource to facilitate conflict resolution.
- Enhance the University of Arkansas' strong community presence as an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer
- Serve as management liaison to governmental enforcement agencies and minority community groups and organizations
- Make policy recommendations that enhance the University's commitment to affirmative action and equal opportunity
- Provide information about the George Washingtion Carver Project, an affirmative action initiative of the University of Arkansas designed to increase the racial diversity of the graduate and professional student body.
